Desalination Research Cools Data Centers

Researchers at The University of Texas at Austin published a study in Water Research (2027) showing desalination can cool data centers using local brackish groundwater. The Longview, Texas scenario achieved the lowest water stress using two-stage reverse osmosis. This work follows a September 2026 pause on new permits by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and a probe into existing water use.
