On this day in 1980, DEC, Intel and Xerox published Ethernet version 1.0, the DIX standard, nearly three years before the modern internet. It let any vendor build compatible hardware, starting at 10 Mbps over coaxial cable. Ethernet became the default wired networking technology, now reaching 800 Gbps in data centers.
