Britain's plan B for AI: smaller, cheaper, open labs

Britain allocated up to £60 million to Oxford and University College London for two AI labs. Instead of building larger models, the labs will research making AI more affordable, open, and less dependent on massive computing resources. The goal is to reduce reliance on Big Tech and run AI on common hardware.
