Astronomers detected erythrulose, a four-carbon sugar molecule, near the center of the Milky Way. This marks the first confirmed detection of a monosaccharide in the interstellar medium. Sugars are used by living organisms for energy, structure, and genetic material. Previous finds of ribose and glucose occurred in meteorite and asteroid samples.
