AMC built the Eagle, a family car on stilts with four-wheel drive that preceded the modern crossover. Renault bought AMC in 1979, but after CEO Georges Besse was murdered in 1986, the firm was sold to Chrysler in 1987. Amphicar's Model 770 was a watertight boat-car hybrid; production ended in 1967 after about 4000 units.
