RAG Didn't Die, It Moved Up The Stack

Retrieval-Augmented Generation did not die but moved from a pipeline step into the context layer. Cursor's data shows input-to-output token ratios rose from 4.52x to 11.41x between January and May 2026. Reranking a top-100 or top-200 candidate set produces larger gains than better embedding models.
