Microsoft opened a 15,000 square foot quantum research center at the University of Maryland, giving DARPA on-site access to its Majorana 2 topological quantum chip for independent testing. Previously, outside researchers could only test Microsoft's hardware remotely via cloud. The facility includes a makerspace with seven partner companies, and DARPA's evaluation falls under its Quantum Benchmarking Initiative.
