The European Central Bank is building a digital euro to challenge Visa and Mastercard, which processed 47% of eurozone card payments in 2025. A 12-month pilot starts in the second half of 2027 with 36 finance firms, including Deutsche Bank and Revolut. Merchants must accept digital euros by 2029. The ECB estimates setup costs of €1.3 billion.
