Self-hosting email requires mastering four DNS records: PTR, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. The PTR record must match the server hostname and HELO greeting. SPF goes on the root domain, not the mail subdomain. DKIM uses a selector record. These records convince Gmail's spam filter.
