NASA blames hero mode culture for $4.6 million dish disaster

NASA staff broke a 230-foot deep space antenna at Goldstone by running it in "hero mode," a culture of improvising outside training. The dish over-rotated on Sept. 16, 2025, while tracking Juno, causing $4.6 million in damage, destroying cabling, and flooding the base with 200,000 gallons of water.
