Babies are born with the neural foundations for maths

Newborns can distinguish between quantities of 4 and 12 within days of birth. EEG recordings of 21 infants aged 0 to 3 days old showed brain activity in the parietotemporal area responding to numerical differences. This suggests the neural foundations for numerosity are present at birth.
