Fake citations slip past peer review at top AI conferences

Two reviewers flagged 15 of 22 submissions (68%) for fabricated citations or LLM-generated content. Two papers with hallucinated references were accepted as oral presentations at WACV. A Nature analysis found tens of thousands of 2025 publications likely contain invalid AI-generated references.
