New York became the first U.S. state to halt large data center construction after Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order imposing a one-year moratorium on projects drawing 50 megawatts or more. The order stops the Department of Environmental Conservation from issuing new discretionary permits. Hochul also plans to seek legislation repealing sales tax exemptions for large data centers.
