AI fakes pollute wildlife science records

A red-winged blackbird sighting in Brazil on iNaturalist was fake, created when AI altered a photo of an epaulet oriole. Researchers warn in Nature Ecology & Evolution that generative AI is corrupting citizen-science records. Hundreds of suspect images have been found across iNaturalist, Macaulay Library, and WikiAves. iNaturalist now lets users flag AI-generated or over-manipulated images.
