Virginia Beach opened the nation's first landfill park in the early 1970s, capping 640,000 tons of garbage in 18-inch layers with 6 inches of dirt. The 800-foot-long, 60-foot-high mound, named Mount Trashmore, sits beside the 52-acre Lake Trashmore created from the dredged borrow pit.
