Poolside's Laguna model challenges Chinese AI rivals

Poolside released Laguna, a 118 billion parameter open-weight model that beats most American and Chinese open source competitors on public benchmarks, except Moonshot's Kimi K3. The startup spent 18 months building an industrial model factory to produce new iterations every five weeks. Laguna remains far behind top closed models from OpenAI and Anthropic.
