UCLA researchers developed PhoneBot, an open source humanoid robot platform costing approximately $400 in hardware. The system uses four Android phones, including an older Honor 9 released in 2017, for vision and control. Training reduced joint-angle symmetry error from 0.254 radians to 0.003 radians across five runs. The project remains limited by low-powered servos and lacks arms for object manipulation.
