Vitess replaced its SQL AST evaluator with a Go Virtual Machine that matches C++ MySQL performance. The new engine is easier to maintain despite being orders of magnitude faster. Vitess uses vtgate instances for stateless horizontal scaling, with each shard backed by a real MySQL instance.
