Cars lack update mandates phones now have

EU ecodesign rules since 20 June 2025 require five years of OS and security updates for smartphones, but no equivalent exists for cars. Rivian and Tesla face lawsuits or hardware upgrades as software-defined vehicles age, with average US car age at 12.8 years.
