Spark plugs seal the combustion chamber using either a tapered or gasket seat. Tapered plugs rely on angled metal shoulders without gaskets. Gasket seat plugs use crushable gaskets. The two types are not interchangeable. Using the wrong seat can damage threads, cause compression loss, and lead to engine misfire.
