University of Pennsylvania researchers led by physicist Bo Zhen developed exciton-polaritons, quasiparticles formed when photons interact with matter, to overcome electron-based computing limits. The particles combine light's speed with switching capability needed for AI hardware. A paper was published in Physical Review Letters.
