ByteBrief ("we", "us", the "Service") is a tech news reader that uses AI to summarize publicly available articles. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. We keep data collection to the minimum needed to run the app, and we do not sell your personal information.
Information we collect
- Account information. Only if you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google so we can create your account and sync your activity across devices. We never see your Google password.
- Your activity and preferences. Saved stories, stories you have seen, reactions, hidden sources, and your reading streak. For everyone this is stored locally on your device. If you sign in, it is also stored in our database so it follows you to other devices.
- Email address (optional). If you subscribe to the daily digest, we store your email to send that digest. If you enable push notifications, we store the browser push subscription needed to deliver them.
- Technical and usage data. When you visit, our servers and network provider record your IP address, an approximate location (city, region, country) derived from that IP, your browser, operating system, device type, referring page, language, and similar device characteristics such as screen size and time zone. We use this for security, troubleshooting, and basic operational analytics.
How we use your information
- Operate the feed, save your preferences, and sync them when you sign in.
- Send the daily digest or push notifications you opted into.
- Keep the Service secure, prevent abuse, and diagnose problems.
- Understand, in aggregate, how the Service is used so we can improve it.
The AI summaries are generated from publicly available articles. We do not use your personal data to train AI models.
Cookies and local storage
If you sign in, we set a session cookie that keeps you logged in. We use your browser's local storage to remember preferences and your saved and seen stories, and a service worker to cache content for offline use. We do not use third-party advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
Third-party services
We rely on a small number of providers to run the Service:
- Google for optional sign-in.
- Cloudflare for content delivery and network security.
- ipapi.co to estimate approximate location from an IP address.
- Resend to deliver digest and notification emails.
- News publishers whose article links and images are shown in the feed. Visiting an original article is subject to that publisher's own privacy policy.
These providers process data only to perform their function for us. We do not sell or rent your personal information to anyone.
Data sharing
We share information only with the providers listed above to operate the Service, or when required by law (for example, a valid legal request), or to protect the rights and safety of users and the Service.
Data retention
We keep account and activity data while your account is active. Usage and technical logs are kept only as long as needed for security and operations. You can ask us to delete your account and associated data at any time using the contact below.
Your choices and rights
- Sign out at any time, or use the app without signing in at all.
- Clear saved and seen stories by clearing the site data in your browser.
- Unsubscribe from the digest using the link in any digest email.
- Turn push notifications off from the in-app menu or your browser settings.
- Request access to, correction of, or deletion of your data by emailing us at [email protected].
Security
We use reasonable technical measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children
ByteBrief is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
International users
ByteBrief is operated from India and may be accessed worldwide. By using the Service you understand your information may be processed in countries whose data protection laws differ from those where you live.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above. Significant changes will be highlighted in the app.
