China bans AI companion apps over emotional dependence

Beijing directed companies to stop creating chatbots that encourage emotional attachment, effective July 15. ByteDance removed persistent-memory features from its Doubao app, and Alibaba disabled similar companion features in Qwen. The rules aim to promote human relationships as China's birth rate hit a record low of 5.63 per 1,000 people.
