Anthropic to pay $1.5B in copyright settlement

A federal judge approved a $1.5 billion settlement requiring Anthropic to pay thousands of authors about $3,000 per book for using pirated copies to train its Claude chatbot. Bloomsbury, publisher of Harry Potter, has 14,087 titles listed and expects about $19 million after fees. Over 91% of 482,000 works have been claimed.
