Meta Embeds Facial Recognition Code in Smart Glasses App

Meta's smart glasses app contains code for facial recognition, called NameTag, which can capture faces and notify the wearer when it recognizes a previously captured face. The feature is not currently enabled or sending biometric data to Meta's servers. Meta was interested in launching the feature during a 'dynamic political environment' in the US. The feature poses serious ethical concerns, but also potential accessibility benefits for users with visual impairments.
