UN chief demands AI firms disclose environmental costs

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on AI companies to disclose their carbon, water, and land use. He proposed the AI Environmental Transparency Initiative and urged firms to power facilities with renewables by 2030. A June 2026 UNU-INWEH report warns AI's environmental footprint is expanding rapidly across all three dimensions.
