Microsoft says new quantum chip 1,000 times more reliable than predecessor

Microsoft's Majorana 2 quantum chip features qubits that survive for an average of 20 seconds, a 1000-fold improvement over Majorana 1's milliseconds. The new chip uses a different material stack to enhance stability and reduce qubit decoherence. This increase in coherence time enables commercially useful quantum computing within three years. The advancement was announced at Microsoft Build 2026. Microsoft claims the upgrade significantly shortens the timeline for practical quantum applications.
