AI creates first synthetic viruses

Arc Institute researchers used the genome language model Evo to design new viral genomes, producing 16 viable viruses from 700,000 candidates. The viruses infected bacteria and overcame resistance in two E. coli strains, though they only target bacteria, not humans.
