Windows update leaves third-party Office document launches in limbo

Microsoft's June Windows update broke Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) automation, causing third-party apps like CCH Engagement, Dentrix, and Zotero to fail when launching Office documents. Microsoft directed users to open files directly instead and said affected vendors are independent of Microsoft. A fix requires contacting Microsoft support or waiting for a future update.
