Great Lakes Subsurface Hides Tardigrades and Rock-Eating Fungi

Researchers found a thriving ecosystem of rock-eating fungi, worms, and tardigrades hundreds of feet beneath the Great Lakes region. The study, published in The ISME Journal, identified 689 fungi species, including 13 new ones, in water last at the surface 11,000 years ago.
