AI image energy equals phone charge

Generating one image with Stable Diffusion XL uses nearly as much energy as fully charging a smartphone, according to a study by Hugging Face and Carnegie Mellon researchers. The paper tested 88 models across 30 datasets. Text generation uses far less energy. A thousand AI images produce carbon equivalent to driving 4.1 miles.
