Email's original design from the 1960s and 1970s lacked security, with no concern for message confidentiality or integrity. The OSI suite offered X.400 with encryption features, but it failed to displace internet email. Modern email still relies on MIME as an inelegant workaround for 7-bit ASCII limitations.
