Quake CD encryption flaw stranded 150,000 discs

A $10 Quake shareware CD included encrypted full versions of id Software games, but the flawed pay-over-the-phone system lasted only 39 days after the 1996 release. The developer was left with 150,000 unsellable discs. Google engineer Fabien Sanglard recounted the story.
