A 2025 study estimates that one year of GPT-4o queries at 700 million per day could consume enough freshwater for cooling to match the drinking needs of 1.2 million people. The study, titled "How Hungry is AI?" by Nidhal Jegham and colleagues, calculates each short query uses about 0.42 watt-hours. The electricity would power 35,000 U.S. homes for a year.
