A study of NBA play-by-play data from 2015-16 through 2025-26 found that before the 2025-26 Heave Rule removed the statistical penalty for end-of-quarter heaves, players shot on only 58 percent of opportunities. After the reform, the heave rate jumped to 94 percent, with the largest changes among efficient shooters and contract-year players.
