MIT and EPFL engineers built the Faav, a half-pound flapping-wing robot that dives underwater, then emerges and flies. The robot uses hydrophobic wings and replaceable tails. Researchers aim to deploy it for oceanography in dangerous aquatic regions, collecting samples and data at lower cost than traditional vessels.
