Google PQC Roadmap Pressures Digital Certificates

Google moved its post-quantum cryptography migration deadline to 2029, six years ahead of NIST, and added a product roadmap naming Merkle Tree Certificates for 2028. MTCs replace bulky quantum-resistant signatures with compact proofs logged in a public Merkle tree, keeping X.509 certificates. The IETF draft is co-authored by Google, Apple, Cloudflare and Geomys, with Let's Encrypt committing in June 2026.
