Coral Cilia Vortices Fail in Hot Water

Corals use hairlike cilia to spin vortices that deliver oxygen, but heat disrupts this. A May 2026 Science study exposed Porites lutea to 39 degrees Celsius, finding faster cilia beating consumes oxygen, risking suffocation. The 2014 MIT and Weizmann research first revealed this mechanism.
