A handheld device developed by University of California, Berkeley chemist Omar Yaghi uses metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to extract drinkable water from desert air using only sunlight. A 2023 field test in Death Valley yielded up to 210 grams of water per kilogram of the MOF-303 material in a day-night cycle. The technology has been scaled by Yaghi's company, Atoco, into container-sized units capable of producing up to 1,000 liters of clean water per day in extreme desert conditions.
