A University of Massachusetts Amherst team built the 25-kilowatt Wind Furnace turbine in 1976 using a Ford truck axle and donated parts. The project proved wind could heat homes and reduce oil dependence after the 1973-1974 energy crisis. It kick-started the U.S. wind industry.
