Matter over Thread sensors drain coin cell batteries within eight months, while a Zigbee sensor from 2022 still sits at 63% battery. The difference comes down to architecture: Matter is an IP-based protocol with heavy packet overhead, whereas Zigbee's lighter design solved battery longevity years ago. For builders, this means Matter's convenience comes at a real maintenance cost.
