Feds pass controversial C-22 lawful access bill before summer break

Canada passes Bill C-22 on June 18 allowing law enforcement access to digital data with six-month metadata retention and explicit exclusion of encrypted data decryption. The bill includes 12 amendments passed in 25 hours of debate by RCMP and CSIS officials. Google, Apple, Meta and Signal criticized the bill for insufficient privacy safeguards.
