Atacama fog feeds unique lichen colonies

The Atacama Desert's hyperarid core has gone tens of millions of years without measurable rainfall. A marine fog called camanchaca rolls in from the Pacific and deposits moisture on coastal cliffs. Lichens absorb this water vapor directly, and many species exist nowhere else on Earth.
