Ray Tomlinson sent the first network email between two side-by-side PDP-10s at BBN in Cambridge, using the @ symbol to separate the username from the destination machine. The message, likely QWERTYUIOP, traveled through ARPANET. Tomlinson chose @ because it could not appear in a user's name.
