NASA's Perseverance rover identified complex carbon compounds in Mars's Jezero crater. The compounds, called macromolecular carbon, were found on rocks with spotted patterns resembling microbial activity on Earth. Scientists caution the carbon could also come from non-biological sources like meteorites.
