NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, 5.9 billion miles from Earth, is approaching the termination shock boundary of the heliosphere. Researchers at Southwest Research Institute predict the spacecraft will exit the solar system between 2029 and 2040, based on studies of the heliosphere's expansion and contraction during the Sun's 11-year cycle.
