Atlantic Radioactive Waste Barrels Become Reefs

French and international researchers surveyed thousands of radioactive waste barrels dumped in the Atlantic between 1950 and 1990. The roughly 200,000 tons of low- and intermediate-level waste have degraded, but local ecosystems adapted, using the dump sites as shelter. The Radiocean mission mapped the sites and measured radioisotope levels and their effects.
