A sloshing-mercury-powered neon light recreates a 1675 effect observed by astronomer Jean Picard. Adding neon gas at 40 millitorr produced a bright orange-red glow. Krypton glowed blue but dimmer. Teflon and copper beads also worked, but Galinstan wetted glass and prevented charge buildup.
