The UK government is expanding passkey support across GOV.UK One Login, allowing over 23 million users to sign in with biometrics or a PIN instead of passwords and SMS codes. Following a trial with 300,000 users, passkeys now account for nearly 10% of daily logins. The government states the switch is up to eight times faster and is already saving taxpayers nearly £600 per day in SMS costs.
