Azure Linux 4.0 is Microsoft's first general-purpose Linux

Microsoft shipped Azure Linux 4.0 into public preview at Build 2026. It runs on any Azure virtual machine, not just as AKS host. The distribution is derived from Fedora 43 snapshot. Microsoft tracks Fedora upstream and applies declarative overlays with written justifications. Azure Linux 4.0 marks the first general-purpose Linux from Microsoft.
